INSTRUMENT NAME: AppliedBiosystems / MDS Sciex QSTAR XL Quad - Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer
INSTALLATION DATE: December 2002
OPERATOR: Julian Whitelegge, Frederic Halgand, Sara Bassilian, Puneet Souda, and Lori Shoemaker
SYNOPSIS: Our AppliedBiosystems / MDS Sciex QSTAR XL is our newest
mass spectrometer arriving as a late Christmas present on the 26th of December
2002. With a mass range of 5 to 40,000 m/z, mass accuracy of 5 ppm, and
resolution of 10,000 FWHM this instrument adds significant capabilities
to our collection of instruments. We now have the capability of true MALDI
MS/MS using the oMALDI source. This capability had proven itself with true
MS/MS spectra [as opposed to PSD] on peptides in limiting amounts. With the
nano-spray source installed we routinely run LC/MS/MS proteomics experiments,
especially those involving Dr. Julian Whitelegge’s plant photosynthesis
membrane proteins. Recent software patches have also solved many of the
initial software bugs. The QSTAR is a vital addition to our already wide
array of instruments.
